Last weekend I had the Food Network on in the background while doing work around the house. Ree Drummond from the uber successful blog THE PIONEER WOMAN was on and my ears perked up when she mentioned she had a fabulous recipe for Potates Gratin that don't require peeling the potatoes. Say what?? Now she had my undivided attention! I made the recipe for a group of friends the following night and it was delicious! Of course I have to share it with all of you. RECIPE

One Year Ago

A year ago tomorrow I was driving my Saab south on the Merritt near New Canaan, CT and lost control of my car, crossed two lanes and flipped my car. Terrifying.

I was pinned upside down by the roof while kind strangers ran up to the side of my car convinced I would be dead. Thank god for Saabs! It easily could have been a fatality, so today I wanted to pause....take a break from entertaining posts and be grateful. In the hustle and bustle of every day life, it is easy to forget how precious it is...

My Jack Russell Terrier, Auggie, also flipped and was fine. Amazing.

Dazzling Diana

Last year I attended an intimate lecture at the Museum of Fine Arts with Mario Testino. This world famous photographer talked about many of his famous clients, but especially Princess Diana. His photos of her were the last formal shots taken before she was tragically killed 5 months later.

Testino's images were used in the exhibit on Princess Diana that I saw last weekend. It is on loan from the Althorp Estate (the Spencer family’s 500-year-old home). The show had pieces ranging from Diana’s royal wedding gown and 28 of her designer dresses to personal mementoes and rare home movies. It was beautifully done (though we had to wait 3.5 hours in line to get in - it was brutal. Luckily a night in Newport following the exhibit made the weekend worth it.)

Since I spent much of the weekend focused across the pond, I got to thinking where would I host an event in London? For me it would be at the CONNAUGHT - hands down.

Whether a large gathering or intimate affair, this would be the ideal setting.

I am busily packing my bags to leave for the holidays and for our family party tomorrow night. For over twenty years we have been hosting a fabulous Christmas Party in CT. It starts with cocktails in the house which is decorated to the nines with the fires roaring - so festive. We then move to the barn for dinner with fifty of our favorite folks.

A friend brought me a few bottles of BULLY BOY vodka and gin as a hostess gift. They are so good and not surprising these scrumptious spirits are now being served in all of Boston and Nantucket's best restaurants. Any of these bottles would make the perfect hostess gift or for stocking your own bar during the holidays.

Bully Boy Distillers is owned and operated by brothers Will and Dave Willis, who were inspired by their childhood family farm. During prohibition the farm was home to a collection of local artisan spirits, which were stored in a vault in the farmhouse basement. With names like “Medford Rum” and “Cow Whiskey,” these precursors to today’s craft spirits were harsh and remarkably undrinkable, but they had character.

Roughly 70 years after Prohibition was abolished the vault was rediscovered. Though covered in dust and cobwebs, it was inspiring, and the idea for a distillery that continues the legacy of artisan distilling in Massachusetts was hatched.

Paying particular attention to the caliber of ingredients used in its products, Bully Boy produces premium spirits in small batches, emphasizing quality over quantity. As homage to the farm, the distillery is named after Bully Boy, a favorite farm workhorse.

My 50th Birthday Party. It was a complete surprise with fifty of my favorite friends and at one table.

Every year I host an annual holiday dinner for my closest friends. Here is my table from last year with a fresh, modern holiday look. The color theme: green, white and silver. I arranged flowers in a revere bowl with berries and rosemary to add interest and texture along with roses, freesia and lilies.

The tablecloth was made with Dwell Fabric I found on sale at FABRIC.COM

My favorite addition to the table are the bucks. Love them! I made collars out of boxwood from my mantle for an extra pop.

The place card holders I made with a glue gun and assorted Christmas balls.

The final touches: silver chargers, silver napkin rings and silver tapers. And the table was complete!

When my schedule permits, I love to make gifts by hand. Here is a wreath I made for a good friend that hangs in her home in Greenwich. I found all of the ingredients for the wreath at Michael's. What you need: foam wreath, ribbon, lots and lots and lots of reindeer moss, a glue gun and a ton of patience.

Before we turn to all things Christmas, I wanted to share one image of the stunning table my Mum (Dixie) created for our Thanksgiving.

The pumpkin place cards I made following a similar look from Martha and spray painted the pumpkins gold and tied a card to each one with narrow ribbon. The silver candelabra are antiques passed down through our family mixed with amber glass votives. Antique ruby port glasses were mixed with rental wine glasses. The centerpiece was truly "green" with a harvest bounty of fruits, veggies and nuts. The food and the wine were stellar, only upstaged by a great group of family and fabulous friends. Hope you all had a great holiday, too!

Five for Fall - Pretty Pink Tulips

Interview: Janell from Isabella and Max

I clapped with glee when Janell from the popular blog ISABELLA AND MAX and the e-zine HOUSE OF FIFTY agreed to an interview. If you aren't reading both, then you are missing out!

Janell has always been passionate about design. She studied painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Janell later extended her studies at the school's fashion design department for another three years. After working briefly for a clothing manufacturer, she then launched her own line, receiving accolades from WWD and The Chicago Tribune. Several years later, with a move to Oregon and the arrival of her wonderful children Isabella and Max, Janell's focus shifted to the home and interior design. In 2006, she started her current business creating warm and eclectic interiors and soon started a blog. From this came many writing opportunities and Janell's latest role as Founding Editor of the online magazine House of Fifty.

How did you get in to design?
I have always been interested in design! I received my BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, returning a few years later to study fashion design. I worked in that field for quite a while, designing and manufacturing a line of women's clothing. Once I took time off, after becoming a mom and purchasing our first home, I became very interested in home design via paint, decor, furnishings and DIY!

Two "must haves" when you entertain at home?
Great music and great lighting. We love playing music in our house nearly all the time, and music creates a wonderful backdrop when entertaining. Good lighting that isn't too bright is also key in creating a cozy and welcoming environment.

What is your greatest extravagance?
This has nothing to do with design or my home, but my greatest extravagance is taking Pilates classes each week. Sometimes it's a private, other days a duet or class of five. It has made all the difference in how I feel each day; happier and healthier with a LOT more energy!

Two famous people you would love to have at your next dinner party?
If this were possible, Audrey Hepburn: such kind grace and beauty, that I would love seeing in person. Second Rachel Zoe, my daughter is a fashionista with an original style that constantly amazes me. I would love to observe the two of them discussing their fashion perspectives...it would be a conversation not to forget I'm certain.

A few hot design trends that you think are fantastic?
Wallpaper, and wallpaper. If budget were not a concern I'd probably become an example of how too much of a good thing is NOT a good thing! Additionally, the trend to create individualized spaces that reflect the resident rather than the trends is a great trend.

And a few that you could leave behind?
I'm not a fan of purple, unless in very small doses, and too many mirrored surfaces just reminds me of bad 60's and 70's decor.

Two things you can't live without?
My family and my bathtub!

The best party you ever attended and why?
I once went to a party, a couple dozen years ago, in NYC where many legendary people were in attendance. It was like stepping into a book for a few brief hours.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
People would be surprised to learn I worked in an Alaskan Fisheries for seven summers to put myself through school. Tough job and tough job environment. The experience made me pretty tough and resilient, but I don't think this shows through on the outside.

Five for Fall - Spicer and Bank

A warm welcome to my next guest in the Five for Fall Series - Allison from SPICER AND BANK. Allison is an interior designer who loves all things art, architecture, and vintage decor! Spicer and Bank are her grandmothers' maiden names. After getting a masters in the history of decorative arts and working at high end design firms in NYC, she now lives in Singapore with her husband.

1. A yummy fall cocktail! Have one special drink all mixed and ready when friends arrive. This FALL PUNCH with apple cider and whiskey is so festive.

2. Spruce up your dining chairs with THROW PILLOWS. Adding a small throw pillow to each chair is a great way to bring in extra pattern and color and make the space special. Plus it's so comfy and welcoming and encourages everyone to linger and talk.

3. A CHEESE PLATE A cheese plate looks fantastic and is so easy to assemble. Add fall inspired items like dried cranberries or nuts. Plus everyone loves cheese and it's great they can just help themselves!

4. Simple and natural FLOWERS. Make one casual, but lush vase of wild flowers and let the blooms spill over the sides - fall is the season of harvest and abundance after all!

5. Unexpected little FAVORS! Instead of tall pillar candles or hurricanes which can be hard to talk over, use lots of low votives scattered across the table. Plus, you can find inexpensive ones, like these from West Elm, and send each friend home with one as a little gift (or keep them for yourself since they are so pretty!)

Simple Elegant Dinner

Life is hectic and entertaining in style on a weeknight is not easy to pull off with grace. I recently bought fresh Butternut Squash Ravioli and served it in a Browned Butter Sage Sauce - yum! RECIPE

Paired with an Arugula Salad with crumbled Goat Cheese, Yellow Cherry Tomatoes and diced Pears. I tossed it in the best Balsamic Dressing I have ever made - the secret is brown sugar. DRESSING RECIPE

I paired it with a Pinot Noir, a crusty baguette, a fire in the fireplace and lots of candles. Voila! Now wasn't that simple??

Party Details: Dinner and Concert in Our Barn

My cousin RAIN PERRY is an uber talented singer. She flew in from LA a few weeks ago and Dixie hosted a wonderful dinner in our barn followed by an intimate concert with Rain - what a treat!

The house and barn in CT get party ready. Cocktails in the house, a seated dinner in the barn and then back to the house for dessert and the concert.

Chef ANNE GALLAGHER cooked a fabulous meal, as always! For nibbles to accompany cocktails, Anne made three different variations of herbed cheese biscuits. Yum!

The first course was a Field Green salad with local greens

The feel of the party was rustic, country casual so Dixie wanted comfort food. Anne made two phenomenal versions of chilli (one beef and one vegetarian) with emdless options for toppings and homemade cornbread. To.Die.For!

Dessert was a Pear Almond Tart followed by a concert with Rain. What a great evening!

Interview: Celebrity Florist Lewis Miller

Our friend and catering phenom PETER CALAHAN first introduced us to the jaw dropping work of celebrity florist/designer LEWIS MILLER. After seeing a few pictures of a party that Peter and Lewis collaborated on for Labor Day it was love at first sight. Here are a few images of the party with orange pop and I love the faux graffiti.

Lewis is not only crazy talented, he is so so nice (just like Peter). Born and raised in California farm country amid olive, almond and peach orchards and gardens full of cabbage roses, sweet peas, and wisteria, Lewis Miller developed a respect for nature early on. At 18, he moved to Seattle where he studied horticulture and landscape design. After seven years of successfully pursuing his interests in design, flowers, and event planning, Lewis moved to New York. In March of 2002, Lewis’ vision of a country life in a metropolitan setting inspired him to create LMD New York, Lewis Miller Design.

How did you get in to design and flowers?
Long story - not very interesting really. Love to make things beautiful. I am a Gemini with a short attention span. There you go.

Two "must haves" when you entertain at home?
Help and alcohol.

What is your greatest extravagance?
NYC in the winter is assault on the senses. To make it a bit more agreeable, I just ordered from a furrier here in NYC the most magnificent coyote fur blanket lined with grey pinstripe cashmere flannel. I can't wait to sleep in it!

Two famous people you would love to have at your next dinner party?
Madonna and Lady Gaga. Oh, wouldn't that be fun! I would heap the center of the table with masses of hydrangeas and then watch them fly.

A few hot design trends that you think are fantastic?
I'm feeling the need to glam things up a bit and am loving metallic finishes - especially burnished gold and bronze, minerals, alabaster, mother of pearl - things that look like they were mined from the earth or found in the sea.

And a few that you could leave behind?

The farmhouse table, Mason jar, weather vane, faux 18th century hipster crafty look has got to go. Shoo shoo.

Two things you can't live without?
Travel and books.

The best party you ever attended and why?
Haven't been there yet.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I'm very shy. Used to be endearing, now just mistaken for indifference. Not cute.

Manolos and Milk?

A few miles from our family home in CT ARETHUSA FARM is becoming all the rage. This is not your average farm with its spotless barns, which hold 375 cows and owned by George Malkemus and Anthony Yurgaitis, president and vice president of Manolo Blahnik. Yup! You read that right...this is a farm built by Manolo Blahnik and their shoe fortune.

Their slogan is “Milk like it used to taste,” because Arethusa’s milk reminded Mr. Malkemus of the milk he grew up on in Texas. The products are a result of the best in technology and old-fashioned TLC, starting with the cows. The milk comes from cows that are pasture-fed in good weather; at other times they receive Canadian hay and mixtures of grains. Then there’s the TLC: daily tail-washing, conditioning with Pantene Pro-V (seriously) and brushing, plus a weekly full body wash. Pampered? No one at Arethusa thinks so. It keeps parasite levels low and the cows healthy and improves milk quality. I think Carrie Bradshaw would approve, especially of the barn's motto which is pictured below.

Looks for their line of milk, cheeses and ice cream at Stop and Shop, Whole Foods or their retail store at 822 Bantam Road in Bantam, CT.
